Sport: World Cup stadium named
Tuesday, November 10th 2009The city council has voted to name the city’s new football stadium Cape Town Stadium.
The facility, which replaces the former Green Point stadium near the city centre, also has the Xhosa name Inkundla Yezemidlalo Yasekapa and the Afrikaans name Kaapstad-stadion.
The council chose the name from over 300 proposals by city residents including Dome of Storms, Foot of Africa, Saartjie Baartman, Table Top, Motherdrome, Rainbow International Stadium and the South Easter.
The stadium is due to host eight matches in the 2010 World Cup: five first-round matches, one second round, one quarter final and one semi final. The final will be played in Johannesburg on 11 July.
